So we’ve established why we need to vacuum the silicone when making sex toys.
But, there’s a right way and a wrong way to work the valves on a vacuum chamber. Do it the wrong way and you could end up ruining not only your silicone but also your pump and hoses!
It’s really not too hard as long as you keep one rule in mind:
The valve on the vacuum side should ALWAYS be closed unless the vacuum pump is ON and pulling air.
Follow this rule and you should be in good shape.
Ok.. but what does that really mean in practice?
Here’s how I would recommend that you do the vacuuming process:
- Place your cups in the chamber
- Put the lid on and make sure it is centered
- close both valves
- Turn on the vacuum pump
- Open the vacuum valve
- Let the vacuum pump pull a full vacuum
- Close the vacuum valve
- Do NOT turn off the pump without closing the vacuum valve
- Turn off the vacuum pump
- Open the fresh air valve to equalize the pressure
- Take off the lid
- Remove your silicone
What happens if I turn off the vacuum pump before closing the vacuum valve?
If you forget to close the vacuum valve before turning off the vacuum pump, the vacuum in the chamber will pull the oil out of your pump and dump it into the vacuum chamber and destroying your silicone at a minimum.
Just get in the habit of closing the vacuum valve BEFORE you do ANYTHING.
So follow these tips and you should be fine – if you are more of a visual learner, you can check out this video where I show you exactly how to work the valves.
